چکیده

As society becomes more complex, complexity becomes part of our education. Education nowadays witnesses complex problem solving tasks and multidisciplinary teamwork. Although multidisciplinarity is a prerequisite for the knowledge construction imposed by these tasks, it is in no way a guarantee. Multidisciplinary teams need common ground to enable the knowledge construction needed for complex problem solving. A framework for knowledge construction inspired the design of computer support for knowledge construction. The basic support principle consisted of making individual perspectives explicit. This principle was embedded in a collaborative learning environment in three ways, which differed in the extent to which users were coerced to adhere to the embedded support principles. High coercion, as expected, resulted in more explicit negotiation of common ground. Intermediate coercion resulted in the least common ground, because it strongly disrupted typical group processes.

Perspectives on collaborative knowledge-building environments: toward a cognitive theory of computer support for learning

I am interested in what I refer to as collaborative Knowledge-Building Environments (KBEs).These are software environments for supporting the construction of knowledge by groups of people. I consider this to be a paradigmatic task of CSCL (computer supported collaborative learning) because I assume that the notion of collaborative learning that CSCL practitioners strive to support is a construc...

Collaborative Information Environments to Support Knowledge Construction by Communities

In the information age, lifelong learning and collaboration are essential aspects of most innovative work. Fortunately, the computer technology which drives the information explosion also has the potential to help individuals and groups to learn much of what they need to know on demand. In particular, applications on the Internet can be designed to capture knowledge as it is generated within a ...

Conceptual and procedural knowledge construction in computer supported collaborative learning

This paper focuses on learners' knowledge construction in computer supported collaborative learning. It investigates how far individual knowledge (prior knowledge), collaborative knowledge (the quality of collaborative knowledge construction), and instructional support may contribute to the outcomes of learners' knowledge construction. It analyzes predictors for learners' learning outcomes with...

Co-constructing Artefacts and Knowledge in Net- Based Teams: Implications for the Design of Collaborative Learning Environments

Computer-based learning environments for science and mathematics education support predominantly individual learning; from first generation drill and practice programs to today’s advanced, knowledge-based tutorial systems, one learner interacting with one computer has been the typical setting. Mathematics educators, however, increasingly appreciate the value of collaborative learning and includ...

Facilitating collaborative knowledge construction in computer- mediated learning with structuring tools

Collaborative knowledge construction in computer-mediated learning environments puts forward difficulties regarding what tasks learners work on and how learners interact with each other. For instance, learners who collaboratively construct knowledge in computer-mediated learning environments sometimes do not participate actively or engage in off-task talk. Computer-mediated learning environment...
